What Are the Top Hotel Destinations in the USA?

The top 10 US hotel destinations on TravelHack, ranked by how often our members searched for them from July to September 2026, are Las Vegas, New York, Miami, Orlando, Chicago, San Antonio, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Nashville and Fort Lauderdale. Below, I take each one in turn: when it is usually cheapest, when it is most expensive, and the one thing that moves the bill most.

This is a measure of what our members looked for, not a count of visitors. A tourism board counts the people who came. I am counting where people about to pay for a hotel actually looked. It also tells you about choice. A search in any of these ten returns well over a hundred bookable properties, so a small change in dates or area can change what you pay.

For timing, I lean on two kinds of evidence: occupancy figures from tourism offices and CoStar, and business-travel rate data from a US corporate booking platform, covering mid-2024 to mid-2026. Business-travel rates track conventions closely. Leisure prices follow the same shape in most cities but not all, so treat the cheapest and most expensive months below as a guide. Where a claim rests on a public source, I name it.

1. Las Vegas: when is it cheapest?

Las Vegas is the most searched US destination on TravelHack, and nine of the fifteen most-viewed properties on the platform from July to September 2026 are in and around the city. The business-travel rate data puts June as its cheapest month and October as its most expensive. Fixed dates sit on top of that: CES, one of the city's largest trade shows, runs from 6 to 9 January 2027.

The thing that moves the bill most is the resort fee. It is a mandatory nightly charge on top of the room rate, and it is taxed like the room at the Strip's 13.38% lodging tax. A room that looks cheaper can be the dearer booking once the resort fee and the tax on it are counted.

My hack: midweek nights are usually cheaper than Friday and Saturday, unless a large convention is in town, so check the convention calendar before you fix your dates.

A search there on TravelHack typically returns around 190 bookable properties.

2. New York: when do hotel prices drop?

January and February are the low point. In 2025 they were the city's quietest months for hotel occupancy, at 70.1% and 73.4%, according to CoStar data cited by the New York State Comptroller. September is the opposite: occupancy reached 86.6% in September 2025, according to CoStar, with the United Nations General Assembly, Fashion Week and the US Open in town.

What moves the bill most is tax. A room in the five boroughs carries 14.75% in sales and hotel occupancy tax, plus a flat $2 city charge on rooms of $40 or more and a $1.50 state fee, for each room, each night, according to the NYC Department of Finance and the New York State tax department. Since 21 February 2026, a city rule has required the price shown for a hotel stay to include every mandatory fee.

If I were booking New York, I would look across the river. Jersey City and Hoboken are roughly 5 to 25 minutes from Manhattan on the PATH train on weekdays. Hotel tax near the PATH stations is a little lower on the New Jersey side, with no flat nightly charge, so compare the full cost with tax included.

A search there on TravelHack typically returns around 460 bookable properties.

3. Miami: which months cost the least?

June to September, and August most of all. The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau says hotels are cheaper from June to September, with prices at their lowest in August, and calls February the most popular month, with higher hotel prices. Miami Art Week, from 30 November to 6 December 2026, is the event week to plan around.

The season is what moves the price most here, and the cheap months overlap the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from 1 June to 30 November. If you book in those months, take a refundable rate.

Tax depends on which side of the bay you sleep. Across most of Miami-Dade County, hotel rooms carry 6% in county tourist taxes on top of sales tax. In Miami Beach, the county and city taxes come to 7%. My hack: put a mainland option next to a beach one and compare the full cost of each.

A search there on TravelHack typically returns around 390 bookable properties.

4. Orlando: when is the quietest time to stay?

Late summer. In 2024, Orlando hotel occupancy fell to 63.8% in September, against 71.6% for the year as a whole, according to CoStar data reported by the Orlando Sentinel. The business-travel rate data puts August as the cheapest month, and December and January as the most expensive.

What moves the bill most is what sits on top of the rate: Orange County's 6% tourist development tax, plus any resort fee and any nightly parking charge. Since 12 May 2025, a federal rule has required hotels to show the total price, including mandatory fees, up front.

My hack: if you are driving, compare the full cost with parking included, because a cheaper room with paid parking can end up as the dearer stay. Near the theme parks, that one line can decide it.

A search there on TravelHack typically returns around 410 bookable properties.

5. Chicago: why do summer rates climb so high?

Because summer is when the city fills. Hotels in Chicago's central business district booked a record 3.56 million room nights from June to August 2025, according to Choose Chicago, the city's tourism office. Leisure travellers took 2.5 million of those room nights, and big shows at McCormick Place, the largest convention centre in North America, add to the pressure on downtown rooms. The business-travel rate data puts June as the most expensive month and January as the cheapest.

Tax is the other big mover. The combined city, county and state tax on a hotel room was already 17.5%. Since 1 May 2026, hotels with 100 or more rooms in 16 zip codes covering downtown and nearby districts can add a 1.5% tourism improvement district charge, taking the total there to as much as 19%.

My hack: if a big show pushes downtown rates up, stay near a train line instead. The Blue Line runs 24 hours between O'Hare and downtown, a trip of about 40 to 45 minutes.

A search there on TravelHack typically returns around 240 bookable properties.

6. San Antonio: when is it busiest?

April. Fiesta San Antonio, the city's big spring festival, runs from 15 to 25 April in 2027, and the business-travel rate data puts April as the most expensive month and January as the cheapest.

There is room in the market, too. Downtown hotels were 59% occupied from October to December 2025, according to the hotel consultancy Source Strategies, which says business and convention travel has not come back as strongly since the pandemic.

The thing that moves the bill most is tax: 16.75% on a hotel room at the time of writing, made up of 6% for the state, 9% for the city, which includes 2% for the convention centre, and 1.75% for Bexar County. Voters have approved a rise in the county share to 2%.

My hack: unless Fiesta is the reason for the trip, avoid those eleven days, and compare every option with tax included.

A search there on TravelHack typically returns around 270 bookable properties.

7. Los Angeles: which dates should you plan around?

The big events. The Los Angeles area hosts the Super Bowl in February 2027 and the Olympic Games from 14 to 30 July 2028. Outside those, the business-travel rate data puts January as the cheapest month and November as the most expensive.

What moves the bill is where you stay. Inside the City of Los Angeles, hotels charge a 14% transient occupancy tax, and hotels with 50 or more rooms add a 2% tourism marketing assessment. Neighbouring cities set their own rates, so two hotels a few miles apart can be taxed differently.

My hack: pick the area by where your days are, and check whether parking is charged by the night before you compare. The airport's people mover train, delayed several times, is now due to open in early 2027 and will link the terminals to the Metro rail network.

A search there on TravelHack typically returns around 490 bookable properties.

8. Atlanta: which weekend should you avoid?

Labor Day weekend, if you want to stay downtown. Dragon Con, one of the country's biggest pop culture conventions, fills downtown hotels every Labor Day weekend. Next year, Labor Day falls on Monday 6 September 2027. Outside the big event weeks, the business-travel rate data puts December as the cheapest month.

The charge to know is fixed by state law. Georgia adds a $5 hotel-motel fee for every night a room is rented, on top of the room rate and taxes, until a stay reaches 31 nights in a row, according to the Georgia Department of Revenue. On a four-night trip, that is $20 before anything else.

My hack: stay near a MARTA station. The airport has its own station inside the domestic terminal, and the Red and Gold lines run straight to Five Points downtown without a change.

A search there on TravelHack typically returns around 380 bookable properties.

9. Nashville: when is it cheapest?

January, according to the business-travel rate data, which puts October as the most expensive month. The festival calendar is the other thing to plan around: CMA Fest, the city's big country music festival, runs from 10 to 13 June 2027.

What moves the bill here is a mix of percentage and flat charges. Metro Nashville adds a 7% hotel occupancy tax plus a flat charge for each room, each night, on top of sales tax. The flat part weighs more heavily on a cheaper room, and it adds up on a long stay.

My hack: if your dates fall on a festival weekend, price the midweek nights either side before you commit. For fixed festival dates, book a refundable rate early.

A search there on TravelHack typically returns around 270 bookable properties.

10. Fort Lauderdale: when is the busy season?

Winter into spring. Greater Fort Lauderdale hotels were 85% full in March 2026, according to Visit Lauderdale, the area's tourism office, which called it a strong start to the spring travel season. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show adds a busy week in the autumn: in 2026 it runs from 28 October to 1 November.

Summer and early autumn sit inside the Atlantic hurricane season, from 1 June to 30 November, so book a refundable rate for those months.

Broward County adds a 6% tourist development tax to hotel stays of six months or less, on top of Florida sales tax. It is set by the county, so the room rate and any resort or parking fee are what you are really comparing between neighbourhoods.

My hack: Miami is roughly 30 miles south. When Miami has a big week, put a Fort Lauderdale base next to it and compare the full cost of both.

A search there on TravelHack typically returns around 420 bookable properties.

What decides the hotel bill in all ten cities?

Look across all ten and the same four things decide the bill.

  • Fees on top of the rate. Resort fees in Las Vegas, flat nightly charges in New York, Nashville and Georgia, and tourist taxes everywhere. Since 12 May 2025, a federal rule has required hotels to show the total price, including mandatory fees, up front, but taxes can still sit on a separate line. Compare the full cost of the stay, never the headline rate.
  • Event calendars. CES in Las Vegas, the General Assembly in New York, Miami Art Week, Fiesta in San Antonio, Dragon Con in Atlanta, CMA Fest in Nashville and the boat show in Fort Lauderdale. In each city, one week can matter more than the season.
  • Weekday and weekend swings. In Las Vegas, midweek nights are usually cheaper than Friday and Saturday, unless a large convention is in town. Check the pattern for your city before you fix the nights, not after.
  • Being near transit. The PATH in New York, the Blue Line in Chicago and MARTA in Atlanta all let you stay outside the priciest blocks without paying for a car or parking.

How do TravelHack member rates help in these cities?

TravelHack members see member-only rates, with savings of up to 60%* against public rates. Timing still matters: a member rate in CES week is still a rate in CES week.

Which of the ten should you book first?

The one with the fixed date. If your trip is tied to an event, whether that is a trade show in Las Vegas, Fiesta in San Antonio or CMA Fest in Nashville, book a refundable rate as soon as you know your dates. If your dates are free, start with the cities where the calendar swings hardest, New York, Chicago and Miami, and aim for their quiet months. Whichever you choose, compare the full cost, not the headline rate.
