When Are Bali Hotels Cheapest?

Bali hotel rates are usually lowest in February, March and November, and highest in July, August and the stretch from about 20 December into early January. After the month, three things move the price most: the area you stay in, whether the rate is "plus plus", meaning a 10% service charge and 10% regional tax still to be added, about 21% in total, and how far ahead you book. Peak dates reward booking early. Quiet months can reward waiting. Get those decisions right and the property choice becomes the easy part.

Bali is the most searched destination on TravelHack over the last 90 days, ahead of every other destination on the platform. A Bali search on our platform typically returns around 1,200 bookable properties, and only about 1% of Bali searches return nothing bookable. Supply is rarely the problem here. Choosing well among that much choice is, and the price of the same kind of room can change a great deal with the week and the neighbourhood.

Which months are cheapest for a Bali hotel?

Bali has two seasons. The dry season usually runs from around April or May to September or October, and the wet season from about November to March, with January usually the wettest month. Demand, and so price, follows the dry season and the school holidays of the markets that travel to Bali most.

  • July and August are usually the most expensive months. They are the heart of the dry season and they overlap with school holidays in several source markets at once, so rates across the island rise together.
  • About 20 December to early January is the single most expensive window. Christmas and New Year sit in the wet season, but demand is high enough to push rates to their annual peak regardless of the weather.
  • February, March and November usually offer the best hotel rates. They fall in the wet season, when rain often arrives in heavy bursts rather than all day, and hotels have more rooms to fill. Watch for short spikes inside these months: Chinese New Year, the end of Ramadan and the days around Nyepi can all push rates up for a week or so.
  • Mid-May and early September are the shoulder weeks worth knowing. The weather is close to peak conditions, but they sit just outside the busiest holiday windows, so rates are often softer.

If your dates are flexible, moving a trip from late July to early September is often the single biggest saving you can make.

What does "plus plus" mean on a Bali hotel rate?

This is the line that is easiest to miss when comparing Bali prices.

A rate shown with "++" after it does not yet include two charges that are added on top. The first is a service charge, commonly 10%. The second is a regional tax on hotel and restaurant services. Under Indonesia's Law No. 1 of 2022, each regency sets its own rate with a ceiling of 10%, and Badung, which covers Seminyak, Canggu, Uluwatu and Nusa Dua, sets it at 10%. Denpasar, which covers Sanur, and Gianyar, which covers Ubud, also set it at 10%.

The tax is usually calculated on the room rate plus the service charge, not on the room rate alone. That is why the combined figure is so often quoted as 21% rather than 20%: 1.10 times 1.10 is 1.21. Some properties and guides describe a slightly different split, so the only safe check is the final total.

A few things to confirm before comparing two rates:

  • Whether each price is "++" or "nett". A nett rate already includes tax and service, and can beat a cheaper-looking "++" rate once both are added up.
  • Whether breakfast is included, which is common on hotel rates and varies widely at villas.
  • Whether the rate is refundable, especially for peak dates.

How much is the Bali tourist levy, and where do you pay it?

Separate from anything on your hotel bill, international visitors pay a Bali tourism levy of IDR 150,000 per person. It is paid once per entry, not per night, so leaving Indonesia and coming back means paying again. It is set by the Bali provincial government.

According to the official Love Bali site (lovebali.baliprov.go.id), you can pay it in three ways:

  1. Online before you travel, through the Love Bali website or app, which emails you a voucher with a QR code.
  2. On arrival, at payment counters at the airport and ports in Bali.
  3. During your stay, at registered endpoints such as some hotels, travel agents and attractions.

Payment is cashless, by card, bank transfer or QR payment. Some visa and permit holders are exempt, including residence permit, diplomatic and student visa holders. Check the official site, as some exemptions must be applied for in advance. Only use the official .go.id address, because lookalike sites have charged more than the real fee.

Which area of Bali is cheapest to stay in?

Bali is not one market. The main bases differ in character, price and travel time from Ngurah Rai International Airport, and those differences matter more than most travellers expect.

  • Seminyak, about 30 minutes from the airport on a clear run and up to an hour at peak, is the polished all-rounder: restaurants, beach clubs and a long sunset beach. Rates sit in the middle to upper range for the south.
  • Canggu, usually 45 to 60 minutes from the airport and longer at peak hours, is the surf and cafe base. Its hotel rates often sit a little below Seminyak's.
  • Ubud, 60 to 90 minutes inland and up to two hours in evening traffic, is the rice terrace, culture and wellness base. It has some of the cheapest guesthouses on the island alongside high-end retreats, so the spread is wide.
  • Uluwatu, usually 45 to 60 minutes from the airport and longer in heavy traffic, is clifftops and surf breaks. Its clifftop villas and resorts tend to price high.
  • Nusa Dua, 20 to 30 minutes via the toll road, is a gated enclave of large beach resorts. Budget options inside the enclave are thin, so prices there tend to start high.
  • Sanur, about 20 to 40 minutes from the airport along the bypass, is calm, flat and family-friendly, with less traffic than the west coast and good value in the mid-range.

Traffic is part of the price. A cheaper room in Canggu is not cheaper if you spend 90 minutes each way reaching the part of the island you came for.

Is a villa cheaper than a hotel in Bali?

For two people, a hotel room is often the lower cost. For four or more, a private villa can work out cheaper per person, because one nightly rate is split across several bedrooms and you gain a private pool, a kitchen and shared living space.

The comparison only holds if you compare like with like:

  • Count the bedrooms, not the guests. A three-bedroom villa split six ways can cost less per head than three hotel rooms in the same area.
  • Check what is included. Many hotel rates include breakfast and daily housekeeping. Villas vary: some include a cook and staff, others charge extra.
  • Ask about cleaning, the pool and deposits. Check whether daily cleaning and pool care are included, whether the pool is private, and whether a deposit or electricity charge is added at checkout.
  • Check whether the quote is "++" or "nett". The same tax and service question applies to villas as to hotels.
  • Check the location honestly. A villa down a rice field lane can mean a scooter or driver for every meal out. If you plan to ride a scooter, you need an International Driving Permit that covers motorcycles. Otherwise budget for a driver.

How far ahead should you book a Bali hotel?

It depends on the month, and the two halves of the year behave differently.

For July, August and the Christmas and New Year weeks, book early. Popular villas fill well ahead, and rates tend to rise as the dates approach. If you have a specific villa in mind, book as soon as your dates are fixed.

For quiet months, you can often wait. In February, March and November, rates can soften closer to the date when hotels have rooms to fill. Check the cancellation terms before you book, and look again two to three weeks before arrival.

One date needs its own planning. Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, usually falls in March and moves each year with the Balinese Saka calendar. In 2027 it falls in early March. Confirm the exact date with your airline before you book, and keep a clear day either side for arrival and departure. For 24 hours from 6am, the airport and seaports close, no flights land or depart, and everyone, visitors included, stays inside their accommodation. Hotels stay open, but you cannot check in, check out or travel that day. Inside, keep lights low and noise down. Local guards patrol, and only emergencies are exempt. The evening before, Ogoh-ogoh parades close some roads.

How do you plan a cheaper week in Bali, step by step?

A worked version of the above, for a seven-night trip for two:

  1. Pick the month first. February, March, November, mid-May or early September, rather than July, August or late December.
  2. Check the Nyepi date if you are travelling in March, and keep your arrival and departure clear of it.
  3. Choose one or two bases. Four nights in the south, in Seminyak, Canggu or Sanur, and three in Ubud is a common split that cuts daily driving.
  4. Shortlist across two areas, not one, because the same standard of room can price very differently 30 minutes apart.
  5. Compare the full cost of the stay, with tax and service, usually about 21%, added to any "++" rate and breakfast accounted for.
  6. Check the cancellation terms, then look again two to three weeks before arrival in quiet months.
  7. Pay the IDR 150,000 levy online before you fly, through the official site.

Done in that order, the biggest savings are made before you look at a single property.

How do TravelHack member rates help in Bali?

TravelHack members see member-only rates, with savings of up to 60%* against public rates. That sits on top of everything above rather than replacing it: a member rate in the last week of December is still a rate in the last week of December. Timing and area are what make the room cheap. The membership is where a member rate can take the price lower again. Check whether the rate is "++" or "nett" and compare the full cost either way.

You can see how membership works on the pricing page, or start with a free trial and see member rates for your own dates. More guides are on the Travel Hacks blog.

*Based on publicly available retail rates for the same properties at the time of booking.

What is the quickest way to pay less for a Bali hotel?

Bali rewards the traveller who decides the month and the area before the hotel. Avoid July, August and late December if you can, check the Nyepi date in March, add tax and service, usually about 21%, to any "++" rate, and weigh travel time against the nightly price. Those decisions, made in that order, do more for the bill than anything you do at the moment of booking.

Common questions

What is the cheapest month to book a hotel in Bali?

February, March and November usually offer the best hotel rates in Bali. They fall in the wet season, when demand drops and hotels have more rooms to fill, though Chinese New Year, the end of Ramadan and Nyepi can cause short spikes. Mid-May and early September are also often good value, with weather close to peak conditions. July, August and the period from about 20 December to early January are usually the most expensive.

What does ++ mean on a Bali hotel price?

It means tax and service charge are not yet included. A service charge, commonly 10%, is added first, then a 10% regional tax is calculated on the room rate plus that charge. The combined result is usually about 21% on top of the listed price. A "nett" rate already includes both, so compare full totals rather than headline rates.

How much is the Bali tourist tax?

International visitors pay a Bali tourism levy of IDR 150,000 per person, once per entry rather than per night. You can pay online before travelling through the official Love Bali website or app, at counters at Bali's airport and ports, or at registered hotels, agents and attractions. Payment is cashless, and only the official .go.id site should be used.

Is it cheaper to stay in Ubud or Seminyak?

Ubud usually has more low-cost options, including some of the cheapest guesthouses on the island, though it also has high-end retreats. Seminyak tends to sit in the middle to upper range for the south. Ubud is 60 to 90 minutes from the airport and up to two hours in evening traffic, against 30 to 60 minutes for Seminyak, so factor transfer time and cost into the comparison.

Can you arrive in Bali on Nyepi?

No. On Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, the airport and seaports close for 24 hours from 6am and everyone, including visitors, stays inside their accommodation. Nyepi usually falls in March, in early March in 2027, and moves each year, so confirm the date before booking flights. The evening before, Ogoh-ogoh parades close some roads, so arrive at least a day early.
